AR2LD Curriculum
Learning that moves beyond the workshop

At AR2LD (Awaken Roots. Liberate Design.), we believe meaningful learning begins with experience, grows through reflection, and becomes transformative through practice. Our curriculum brings people together to strengthen relationships, navigate challenges, develop leadership, and build healthier cultures and more responsive systems.

Our workshops are designed for schools, nonprofits, community organizations, public agencies, leadership teams, educators, advocates, and groups working toward shared goals. Whether supporting a team through change, preparing facilitators to lead difficult conversations, or creating space for community voices to shape decisions, we design learning experiences that are practical, engaging, and grounded in the realities participants face every day.

Rather than relying on lectures or one-size-fits-all solutions, we create opportunities for participants to examine their experiences, learn from one another, practice new approaches, and translate insights into meaningful action.

Our Facilitation Approach

We don't simply teach concepts. We create opportunities to experience, question, practice, and apply them.

AR2LD uses an interactive, relationship-centered approach to learning. We recognize that participants arrive with knowledge, lived experience, cultural wisdom, and practical expertise. Our role is to create the conditions for that knowledge to emerge, connect with new ideas, and inform collective learning.

Depending on the needs of the group, our workshops integrate:

  • Experiential learning: Interactive exercises, movement, storytelling, and activities

  • Guided reflection: Individual writing, paired conversations, and group dialogue that deepen awareness and understanding.

  • Skill-building and rehearsal: Realistic scenarios, role-play, facilitated practice, and feedback that help participants develop confidence and practical skills.

  • Collaborative problem-solving: Opportunities to explore challenges, exchange perspectives, and develop solutions together.

  • Cultural awareness and inclusion: Attention to identity, power, language, lived experience, and the different ways people participate and learn.

  • Practical application: Tools, commitments, action plans, and shared agreements that support learning beyond the workshop.

  • We balance structure with responsiveness, creating learning environments that are thoughtful, participatory, and adaptable to the people in the room.

  • Our approach is guided by an evolving learning journey: EXPERIENCE → REFLECT → PRACTICE → LEAD → LISTEN → REPAIR → STEWARD → TRANSFORM

  • This journey reflects our belief that lasting change develops through continuous learning, shared responsibility, and action over time.

Workshop Formats & Learning Experiences

AR2LD offers flexible learning formats that can be adapted to organizational goals, participant needs, and available time.

Focused Workshops | 2–3 Hours

Designed to introduce a topic, develop awareness, or strengthen a specific skill.

  • These sessions combine foundational concepts, facilitated discussion, and practical activities. They work well for professional development meetings, community gatherings, staff learning sessions, and introductory experiences.

  • Participants leave with new perspectives, accessible tools, and clear opportunities for continued learning.

Half-Day Workshops | 4 Hours

Designed for deeper exploration and applied learning.

  • Half-day workshops provide time to examine a topic, engage in interactive activities, practice skills, and reflect on how the learning connects to participants' everyday experiences.

  • These sessions are particularly well suited for team development, communication, conflict navigation, leadership, and facilitation training.

Full-Day Immersive Workshops | 6 Hours

Our six-hour workshops provide an immersive learning experience that moves from connection and exploration to practical application.

  • A full-day workshop creates space for participants to build relationships, examine complex issues, practice new skills, and collaboratively develop strategies for their own environments.

  • While each curriculum is customized, a typical six-hour experience may include:

    • Arrival, connection, and shared agreements: Establishing purpose, relationships, and conditions for meaningful participation.

    • Self-awareness and reflection: Exploring identities, experiences, values, assumptions, and patterns that influence how we engage with others.

    • Shared learning and exploration: Introducing relevant concepts, frameworks, and approaches through interactive activities and discussion.

    • Practice and application: Using scenarios, simulations, small-group exercises, and facilitated rehearsal to build practical skills.

    • Collective learning and problem-solving: Applying new insights to real challenges, organizational practices, or community priorities.

    • Integration and next steps: Identifying commitments, resources, and opportunities to sustain learning.

    • Breaks and a lunch period are incorporated into the schedule, with timing tailored to the engagement.

  • These workshops are particularly valuable for organizations seeking meaningful professional development, practical skill-building, and stronger alignment across teams.

Retreats & Extended Learning Experiences

Step away from daily routines. Reconnect with purpose. Create space for what's next.

  • AR2LD designs and facilitates retreats that provide dedicated time for reflection, relationship-building, strategic thinking, and collective renewal.

  • Retreats offer something that shorter workshops often cannot: sustained space to examine how people work together, reconnect with shared values, navigate emerging challenges, and imagine new possibilities.

  • Our retreat experiences may focus on:

    • Team connection and culture: Strengthening trust, communication, collaboration, and belonging.

    • Leadership development: Exploring leadership practices, shared responsibility, decision-making, and organizational direction.

    • Strategic alignment: Clarifying mission, values, priorities, and practical next steps.

    • Conflict and organizational change: Creating space for difficult conversations, shared understanding, and constructive planning.

    • Reflection and renewal: Supporting sustainability, creativity, personal reflection, and collective care.

    • Community, culture, and place: Exploring identity, cultural memory, belonging, stewardship, and intergenerational relationships.

  • Available retreat formats

    • Half-Day Retreats: Focused experiences for team connection, reflection, or strategic alignment.

    • Full-Day Retreats: Immersive experiences combining relationship-building, facilitated dialogue, experiential learning, and collaborative planning.

    • Two-Day Retreats: Extended engagements that allow groups to move from exploration and reflection toward deeper practice, shared agreements, and action planning.

    • Multi-Day and Residential Retreats: Customized experiences that may incorporate cultural learning, creative practices, nature-based reflection, leadership development, and facilitated planning.

  • Retreats can be designed for in-person, virtual, or hybrid participation, depending on the purpose and needs of the group. Residential and destination-based experiences are developed collaboratively, with location, accessibility, logistics, and partner arrangements established during planning.

Long-Term Partnerships

Some challenges require more than a single workshop.

  • AR2LD works with organizations to develop learning series and longer-term engagements that allow participants to build skills progressively, apply their learning, receive feedback, and strengthen practices over time.

  • These partnerships may include:

    • Multi-session professional development series.

    • Leadership and supervisory learning cohorts.

    • Facilitation and circle-keeping development programs.

    • Conflict navigation and communication training.

    • Community engagement and listening initiatives.

    • Organizational culture assessments and improvement planning.

    • Curriculum development and train-the-trainer programs.

    • Coaching, consultation, and follow-up learning sessions.

  • Our longer-term approach supports organizations in moving beyond isolated training events toward shared practices that become part of everyday work.

Customized Curriculum & Collaborative Design

Your people. Your priorities. A learning experience designed with you.

  • Every organization and community brings a unique history, set of relationships, strengths, and challenges.

  • AR2LD offers customized curriculum development that begins with listening. We work collaboratively with clients to understand their goals, the people participating, the context of the work, and the changes they hope to achieve.

  • Our planning process may include an initial consultation, review of existing materials or organizational practices, identification of learning objectives, curriculum adaptation, and development of activities or scenarios relevant to the group.

  • Depending on the engagement, participants may receive workbooks, reflection tools, facilitation guides, practical frameworks, or resources to support continued learning.

  • We also offer opportunities for post-workshop reflection, evaluation, coaching, and implementation support.

Who We Work With

Our curriculum serves people and organizations working across sectors, including:

  • Schools, educators, and youth-serving organizations.

  • Nonprofits, community-based organizations, and advocacy groups.

  • Public agencies and community boards.

  • Leadership teams, supervisors, and organizational staff.

  • Facilitators, mediators, trainers, and community practitioners.

  • Families, cultural organizations, and intergenerational groups.

  • Community coalitions and organizations navigating growth or change.

What Participants Take With Them

  • Our goal is not simply to deliver information. It is to support learning that participants can carry into their relationships, organizations, and communities.

  • Depending on the workshop, participants leave with greater self-awareness, stronger communication and facilitation skills, practical tools for navigating challenges, shared agreements, and strategies for translating learning into action.

  • Above all, we want participants to leave with a deeper understanding of their own capacity to contribute to meaningful change.
